Not forgetting our director Carla Harvey.

The Shirley Players are a long‑established amateur theatre company based in Croydon, celebrated for showcasing local talent through warm, community‑driven productions. Over the years, they’ve built a reputation for a lively mix of classic and contemporary theatre, often infused with humour and a distinctly community‑focused spirit.

Their recent repertoire reflects this blend, from playful adaptations such as A Christmas Carol by the Farndale Avenue Townswomen’s Guild to original comedies like Peter Gordon’s Out of Focus, a satirical nod to the world of amateur dramatics.

Plays are staged twice a year, in April/May and November, supported by a regular rehearsal schedule on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and occasional Sundays. All roles — onstage and backstage — are filled by volunteers, continuing a long tradition of open participation. Anyone with an interest in theatre is welcome, whether experienced or completely new, reinforcing the group’s role as a social hub at the heart of the community.

From its roots in traditional village‑hall performances, The Shirley Players have grown into a vibrant, multi‑genre theatre group that remains a cherished part of Croydon’s cultural life.
